Effect of hydrogen to attain (001) oriented FePt ordered alloy films from Pt/Fe bilayers

L10 ordered FePt alloy thin films with (001) preferential orientation are regarded as hopeful candidates for future high density perpendicular magnetic recording media because of their high uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy. In our previous papers, we have found that Pt(100)/Fe(100) bilayered films deposited directly on glass disk substrates exhibited FePt highly ordered fct alloy with (001) preferential orientation after annealing at 600°C in hydrogen atmosphere for 120 min[1-2]. However, in this case, effects of annealing in hydrogen atmosphere were not clarified. In this study, the effect of hydrogen in annealing process was examined. Moreover, while Fe layer was annealed in the hydrogen atmosphere at 400°C for 10min previously, it succeeded to attain a similar fct-FePt film on quartz substrate. We reports on the role of hydrogen in this study.
