Storage layer, as a part of a double-layer perpendicular magnetic medium, plays an important role in a recording process [1]. However, to simplify a model, magnetic properties of the storage layer have been frequently neglected in FEM calculations [2] where the storage layer was treated as a vacuum. Perpendicular media frequently employ an intergranular exchange coupling, which affects substantially media properties, for instance coercivity H{sub}C, nucleation H{sub}N and saturation H{sub}S fields, and slope of the MH-loop at a coercivity level [3]. The last parameter is closely related to a permeability of the storage layer μ{sub}(SL). An effect of the storage layer on the writability of perpendicular magnetic recording head was studied by micromagnetic and FEM modeling.
