In magnetic hard disk drives, spacing between flying head and rotating disk is reaching below 5nm in order to achieve ultra high recording density over 300Gbit/inch2, At this extremely narrow head-disk spacing, reducing adhesive force between the head and disk is a dire requisite for the long-term reliability of the drive. In this study, we investigated the effect of molecular structure of the PFPE (per-fluoro-poly-ether) lubricant upon the adhesive force between the head and disk. In particular, we compared the head-disk adhesive forces experienced when lubricants of the same backbone terminated with a functional group at one and at both ends, respectively, were used.
