An efficient utilisation of materials during stainless steel production is one of the most significant factors for a sustainable steel manufacturing. In this work possibilities for recovery of metals and utilisation of waste products used in slag foaming briquettes are investigated.Based on calculation results, two types of briquettes were produced on an industrial scale. Afterwards, briquettes were investigated on a laboratory scale by weight reduction experiments at temperatures up to 1500°C in an argon atmosphere. Thereafter, the amounts of metals recovered from briquettes were estimated. It was found that anthracite and pet-coke have similar capabilities to be used as reduction agents when recovering metals from oxides. Moreover, it was found that Cr, Ni and Fe can be recovered from briquettes to an extent of up to 100%. Therefore, it was concluded that from an economic point-of-view the use of such briquettes for a combined recycling of waste products and slag foaming in the EAF is of large interest to the stainless steel making industry.
