PRACTICE OF LESS SLAG STEELMAKING IN CONVERTER AT BAOSTEEL

Industrial scale experimental results of less slag steelmaking and reduction of manganese ore in 300 t converter at Baosteel have been stated in this paper. Hot metal should be desiliconized, dephosphorized and desulphurized before charging into converter. Thus, the temperature of hot metal decreased sharply. The hot metal ratio should be increased because of the heat deficiency. the results indicate that the amount of slag in less slag steelmaking process is about one-third of the amount of slag in conventional steelmaking process, the unit consumption of lime is 11.3 kg/t, the unit consumption of light burnt dolomite is 6.3 kg/t, and the addition amount of manganese ore is more than 8 kg/t and the average manganese recovery yield is more than 50%. In addition, metallurgical effects and process of this technology are analyzed. In the condition of less slag steelmaking process, the efficiency of decarbonization increases, the effect of dephosphorization and desulfurization by two ways is almost the same.
