The UK Health and Safety Executive has produced a Research Report on factors influencing Ageing and Equipment integrity. This covers why deterioration occurs in a comprehensive manner. In order to help explain the work in the report and why it is not simply about "age" and failure, examples where deterioration has occurred are described. A seawater cooled Titanium cooler on natural gas duty suffered catastrophic failure after 25 years service. The reasons for failure were associated with design, fabrication and a lack of recognition of the points of weakness. In operation unexpected corrosion occurred at the interface of Ti and steel on the gas side, over long-term service. The performance of Titanium process vessels in a manufacturing plant is described, where the operating regimes changed. The Plant improved performance, but created a potential for deterioration, in the longer term, that may prove difficult to manage, particularly as the costs / delivery times of Ti increase. Finally the influence of small fabrication defects in a Tantalum tube on the long term life is described. The presence of defects, in combination with operating stress, could limit the life of the exchanger.
