In this paper, the preparation of a kind of environment-friendly water-soluble phenolic resin for oil filter paper was reported. Apart from the optimization of synthesis conditions, the influence of solidification of phenolic resin on the mechanical properties of impregnated oil filter paper and paper oil resistance was also studied. It was shown that with the use of a certain amount of modification agent, the toughness of phenolic resin was improved; and the free or residual phenol and formaldehyde were reduced. In addition, the storage stability of the phenolic resin was improved. The results showed that the oil filter paper had good mechanical properties after being impregnated. The burst of the oil filter paper coated with an approximate 20% of the resin could be increased up to 514kPa; and the bending stiffness and tensile strength reached 3.95mN.m and 8.03kN.m-1, respectively. The excellent oil resistance was also found for the impregnated paper. The filter paper treated with water-soluble phenolic resin had a better adaptability to oil than that of filter paper reinforced with styrene-acrylic acids copolymer emulsions. For example, the burst strength of impregnated filter papers immersed in petrol and diesel was maintained up to 96.92% and 82.17% after 5 days; whereas the filter papers reinforced with styrene-acrylic acids copolymer emulsions only kept less than 75% of original burst strength. The stiffness retentions of phenolic resin impregnated filter paper were both more than 90% in petrol and diesel, respectively. And their burst retentions were both more than 85%. The overall excellent properties demonstrated that the environment-friendly water-soluble phenolic resin developed in our work is very promising for improving the performance of the oil filter paper via impregnation.
