摘要

Development of slab quality is usually made based on visual inspection of slabs or inspection results from hot rolled or cold rolled coils. Inspection is also made during grinding of the slabs, but also based on visual observations. The visual inspection of the slab is time consuming and that is why amount of material remains low to make statistical studies. On hot or cold rolled coils there can be also defects caused by rolling and inference concerning original defect on slab can be difficult. And if the slabs are ground, there is hardly any correlation between the surface quality of the rolled coils and the slabs. With visual inspection observations are often limited. Photography is often used. Photos are anyhow mostly local and if taken from the hot slabs maybe only the biggest defects can be observed. Especially gradual changes can be problematic.
