The need for more effective and efficient roll-gap lubrication and work roll cooling technologies in hot strip mills is steadily increasing due to ever greater requirements placed on the rolling process, the final product quality, as well as requirements to reduce consumption figures and operational costs. In particular, the rolling of high-strength steels poses enormous demands for both the rolling mill and the coolant/lubricant to be used. This paper focuses on an optimized technology package consisting of a highly effective, robust and reliable work roll lubrication combined with a powerful work roll cooling and anti-peeling (skin cooling). The combination of anti-peeling slrip/roll-gap cooling, work roll lubrication and powerful exit side work roll cooling system keeps the work roll temperatures in an optimum range. This results in a thinner oxide layer on tlie roll surface with less risk for work roll peeling. Furthermore, the work roll wear is reduced. Work roll lubrication minimizes the friction inside the roll-gap, thereby enabling rolling force reductions of up to 20% and more. This allows to redistribute the rolling forces for an optimized pass schedule and, llierefore, supports the achievement of higher reductions and consequently the production of thinner final stnp gauges.
