SDI Butler Cold Mill - Modernizing a High-Production Mill on the Fly

Steel Dynamics' Butler Facility utilizes a two stand reversing cold mill for all its cold mill reduction. This key asset directly feeds multiple cold finishing operations in Butler and other locations. In 2010, SDI and TMEIC Corp. signed a contract to replace the L1, L2, and Models on the reversing mill. This paper discusses the techniques employed which utilized only scheduled maintenance outages to commission the new automation system.
