Benefits of Installing a Side-stream Filter on an Electric Arc Furnace Non-Contact Cooling System

This paper will describe the benefits in chemical cost reduction, equipment life, and maintenance associated with the installation of a side-stream filter on the Timken Faircrest electric arc furnace (EAF)/ladle refining station (LRS) non-contact cooling system in 2012. The Timken Faircrest steelmaking facility was started in August 1985. The electric arc furnace capacity is 175 tons. One million tons of steel are produced each year, via bottom poured ingots. GE Power and Water (formerly Betz Laboratories) began treating the Faircrest facility in 1999.
