In October 1985 SMS achieved a break-through in near-net-shape casting technology; casting a thin slab of 50 mm thickness on a pilot plant in the company's own foundry in Kreuztal-Buschhutten, Germany. The new plant concept, consisting of a near-net-shape Vertical Solid Bending (VSB) caster, a tunnel furnace and a hot rolling mill, made flat roll minimills feasible due to distinctly reduced investment costs. The inline production of hot strip reduces the energy input and hence the processing costs.Figure 1 clearly illustrates the reduced capital equipment requirements by comparing a thin slab caster versus a thick slab caster with the same annual production.
