BOF Refractory Linings: Balancing Brick Life and Gunning/Hot Repairs to Maximize Performance

BOF refractory lining performance varies widely based on operational parameters, operating strategy, refractory selection, and gunning/hot repairs. Operational parameters are influenced by quality of raw materials, grades of steel produced, and by equipment limitations throughout the melt shop. Operating strategy is determined by the demands for steel quality, productivity, and low conversion costs. A refractory "sweet spot" exists where a proper balance between brick life and gunning/hot repairs maximizes vessel availability and minimizes costs. This paper benchmarks BOF refractory lining performances, and shows how the "sweet spot" varies based on shop practices.
