Phosphorus and sulfur contents have beneficial and detrimental effects on the properties of steel. Phosphorus is a potent strengthening element and hence, rephosphorized steels are widely used in cold forming applications. Both phosphorus and sulfur are useful for steel intended for machining applications. However, phosphorus and sulfur are very prone to segregation during casting and heat treatment. The segregation of phosphorus and sulfur can result in embrittlement, viz., poor toughness and ductility. Therefore, for most applications where superior toughness and ductility are required, low phosphorus and sulfur contents are desired.
