In cokemaking process, it becomes more important to reasonably select coal brands because of an increase in both coal price and required coke strength. To predict and control coke strength, MOF diagram system [e.g., 1] has been widely used. The system uses mean maximum reflectance of vitrinite (Ro, JIS M 8816, ISO7404) and Gieseler maximum fluidity (MF, JIS M 8801, ISO10329) as indicators of coal qualities. MF from 200 ddpm to 1000 ddpm is defined as an optimum range for coal blends by the system. When MF is lower than 200 ddpm or higher than 1000 ddpm, the coke strength decreases. It is important to develop techniques to control coke strength even when using low MF coal and high MF coal.
