In December 2003 the European Commission and UITP organised an expert round table on terrorism and public transport. PT professionals from all over Europe discussed the impact of terrorist activities on public transport systems and outlined strategies for preventive and reactive measures. This paper summarises the discussion and outlines the European dimension of collaboration and exchange as seen by PT stakeholders. Recent experience shows that public transport systems are potential targets for terrorist attacks. It is clear that preventing and discouraging terrorist activities as such is the prime responsibility of national security agencies and similar bodies. Yet, the responsibility for the passengers requires public transport stakeholders to acknowledge the threat and to ensure the best possible level of prevention and preparedness.
