A planetary gear train (PGT) is widely used in various kinds of machines all over the world. A PGT has several advantages but is subject to noise and vibration issues. There have been many reports dealing with planet gear displacement under two-axis driving conditions, but we have not seen any report dealing with the same under three-axis driving conditions. In this report, a novel test stand is designed focusing on the balance of inertia between the components to drive the PGT precisely under any driving condition. In addition, a novel PGT called the Z-type PGT is introduced to reduce noise and vibration and to expand gear ratio range, assuming the PGT as a mechanical continuously variable gear ratio transmission.
