As the world gets more connected and television news transitions away from analog linear based video with pen and paper metadata to file based digital content and metadata, the methods to acquiring news is also transitioning. This paper explores how news is acquired today and the transition to an IP based news collection. Items covered include: 1. The current and future state of news acquisition including news management systems, and transmission 2. The implications of advanced coding algorithms such as Windows Media and MPEG 4 3. The effect of IP technology such as transmission protocols, security, and transport media: satellite, wireless and terrestrial networks 4. The packaging and metadata standards used in these file based systems. News production and transmission can easily transition to the future through software-based solutions, which utilize common computing hardware and advanced coding and IP connectivity networks and tools. News acquisition becomes more immediate, more operational and more cost effective.
