The transport of real-time broadcast quality video across IP networks is becoming more and more feasible, but compressed video places unique and demanding constraints on an IP data network. Video services are hypersensitive to packet loss and packet jitter, due to the 40-to-1 or even 80-to-1 compression ratios achieved by today's advanced video compression engines. Despite the Quality of Service challenges inherent in IP networks, broadcast quality video delivery can be achieved. FEC can boost network reliability by simultaneously solving some of the key QoS obstacles to video delivery: lost or reordered packets and packet jitter. Pro-MPEG Forum Code of Practice 3 is an FEC scheme that provides a scalable means of improving network reliability, and can help a network operator meet the demands required by video service providers. Using FEC devices to boost network performance can be performed very quickly, involves a known and predictable impact to the network, and will focus network improvements on those services that demand them - such as video transport. Depending on current network performance, it will likely be simpler and more economical for a network operator to meet the needs of a video service provider by deploying FEC equipment rather than re-engineering the network to the higher demands required by video services.
