The rapid growth of the Internet technology and high-speed IP networks offer new alternatives to bring any audiovisual content to any place. Professional video streaming on IP-based infrastructure has become a reality. Compressed programmes like audio & video content in MPEG-2 streams can be embedded into IP frames. The Real-Time Protocol (RFC 1889, 3550 and 2250) proposes a well-defined architecture that can be used as a framework for audiovisual transport. Real life networks are however far from perfect. Time and information transparency are two major aspects that severely impact the overall performance of such systems.
