The paper will discuss the latest developments in casting process simulation as they relate to light metal castings. This includes simulation results for real world casting examples of several casting processes, with special emphasis on the prediction of casting defects, microstructure, mechanical properties, distortion, cracks and stresses during cooling and heat treatment, as well as the simulation of core gases. It will show the capabilities of casting process simulation today, but will also discuss its present and future limitations, as well as opportunities in this field.
