The world's mobile network infrastructure equipment designed and developed today can only utilize proven 4G technology based on still emerging Third Generation Partnership project (3GPP) LTE Advanced Pro standard Release 13 and Release 14. The scheduled release for the first 5G-3GPP Phase 1 standard is Release 15 will be at the end of 2018 or almost two years from the presentation of this paper at DesignCON 2017. This means the development of Pre-5G radio access network (RAN) optical subsystems over the next two years will be deployed over the next 3 to 4 years. Associated standards and deployed fronthaul subsystem architectures relating to Fronthaul Networks are likely to. Picking the right targets (Architecture &Tech Standards) and thereby ensuring timely success should be of keen interest to design teams contemplating starting 5G-related network design projects with near-term revenue potential. This includes a practical understanding of 4G or 5G Radio Access Networks (RANs) from a technology, architecture, and standards.
