Traditional high-speed backplane connectors were designed as stripline or microstrip structures, requiring shields between columns of contacts in order to control impedance and reduce crosstalk. This paper explores a new connector technology, which utilizes edge coupling between contact blades to control the impedance, eliminating the need for costly, space-consuming shielding. An optimized stagger is presented which minimizes crosstalk in both the connector and its footprint. Test results of the AirMax VS Connector System prove this technology outperforms existing shielded connectors. Measurements were made on active and passive backplane systems running successfully at data rates up to 25 Gb/s.
