"Zero Energy" concrete was introduced in the precast concrete market in the beginning of the third millennium. The innovation behind the concept was the specifically engineered polycarboxylate ether molecule utilised in the superplasticizers. These particular superplasticizers provide several significant advantages for the precast concrete producer in order to rationalise his production process. These advantages include the elimination of vibration by using self compacting concrete and the reduction, or the complete elimination of the heat curing cycle through "passive" curing by exploiting the heat generated by the hydration of the cement. The benefits of technical nature derived by this process include noise reduction, improved working conditions, improved surface appearance and durability of the precast elements. The economical advantages include faster placing of concrete with fewer people, elimination of energy costs of vibration and heat curing. The combined effect of these and several other advantages results in a more cost effective, aesthetic and durable concrete structure. This paper illustrates the mechanism of action of the superplasticizer and presents innovative case studies of its utilisation in some important precast concrete plants.
