MODELS FOR INCLUSION EVIDENCE FOR CHOICE AND INNOVATION

Thirty disabled people in Sheffield were asked about their aspiration, barriers and their ideas for living more independently at home (Mitchell, 2004). The study exposed barriers against people with different types of impairment in their homes and neighborhoods, in their domestic utilities, systems and products, in their housing services and in the marketplace for homes, contents and services. These barriers are addressed in three papers in this edition of Contemporary Ergonomics. The first, (Mitchell, 2005a) presents models for gathering evidence about the barriers that restrict disabled home users. The third (Mitchell, 2005b) presents models for using this evidence to enable consumers and providers to make informed choices and, in so doing, help to establish an informed marketplace for inclusion. This paper proposes a model for eradicating barriers during home refurbishment in the West Midlands the "Smart, Inclusive Homes" initiative under the leadership of the Rowley, Regis and Tipton Primary Care Trust and Medilink West Midlands Ltd. The Model for Inclusive Refurbishment has the following stages (a) Gathering systematic local user evidence (b) Achieving an inclusive home carcass (c) Achieving inclusive home contents (d) Achieving inclusive smart technological backup (e) Achieving inclusive home services.
