The production of global aerosol maps from different satellite sensors required a consistent approach to make standard aerosol products compatible. This paper addresses several issues regarding the compatibility of the aerosol product between land and ocean and between Earth Observations missions. The major point is the use of different types of standard aerosol models which impacts at different levels: the extraction of the aerosol path radiance from the satellite signal and the conversion into an aerosol optical thickness. The resulting "noise" on the aerosol product is illustrated here. Also the selection of a standard aerosol models family should be oriented by it ability to correctly retrieve the apparent optical properties. Using the AERONET network and the associated sky radiance measurement, we proposed a strategy to select the standard aerosol models family.
