Pyrotechnically generated aerosol (PGA) fire suppressants have been used extensively for firefighting applications. But the inorganic aerosol particles produced upon combustion of the PGA agents are strongly hygroscopic and potentially corrosive to metal surfaces in humid circumstances. The experiments were carried out to reduce the potential corrosion of PGA fire suppressants to metal by changing the composition of PGA and in-situ coating the solid aerosol particles. The hygroscopy of the solid particulates, the corrosion to copper plates, and the fire suppression efficiency were measured for the new composition and the coated particles. The results showed that the integrated performances of PGA fire suppressants had been improved.
