3-D Short-Range Localization Device By Low-Cost CW-Doppler Radar

Low cost and short range detection/localisation devices arouse a growing interest for civil and military applications such as automotive anti-collision radars or target detection devices used in active shielding [1]. This field of application is principally devoted to FMCW radars, which allow a direct range measurement like pulsed radars, but are less expensive. In this paper we show that it is also possible, under some conditions, to perform a real time localisation based on CW radars only, by means of an adequate signal processing. The targeted application deals with short range localisation (a few meters) of very fast moving targets (300 to 2000 m/s), in order to engage an instantaneous riposte. The radars we have used are X-band radars and have an output power of +30 dBm, which is enough to cover a range of about 20 meters for small size targets (about -20 dB · m{sup}2). The sampling rate is fixed by the zero-crossings of the Doppler signal at about 5 to 20 us, according to the target speed. In all cases, the total duration of measurement and signal processing cannot exceed a few milliseconds, thus it is imperative to perform a real time processing in less than a few microseconds per sample.
