An emitting subsystem generates laser light. A receiver subsystem is comprised of a group of sensors covering all receiving directions of the laser light. The sensors form a cylinder within which is arranged a portable computer that makes the final calculation and outputs localization and orientation data. A laser emitter, which is a rotating beacon, is positioned on a surrounding wall. A receiver, comprised of a photocell combination in the form of a cylinder, is arranged on a main part of a robot. The position and orientation of the robot are determined based on the time it takes for the laser light to hit one of the photocells.
