Porous structures with variable adjustable open porosity are of great importance in the domain of technical applications. In this regard applications in the domain of filtration of toxic emissions take center stage. The selection of structures depends primarily on the desired filtration effect. This paper shows first steps in investigating adsorption/desorption behaviors of porous structures regarding unburned exhaust emissions and in developing a practical method therefore. This new measuring method has been designed by using a modified gas chromatograph and optimized with regard to exhaust conditions during engine cold start. The adsorption/desorption process of unburned hydrocarbons in porous structures such as open-porous metal foams, metal fiber fleeces, filtration frits as well as sintered hollow spheres has been analyzed using this new system. The potential of conversion is presented with regard to the adsorption capacity of the investigated structures.
