We review progress in optofluidics performed using optical fibers as the photonic transport medium. We fluidically tune the transmission properties of microstructured optical fibers and use telecommunications fibers to probe the optical properties of fluids. Optofluidics is a new and growing field where photonic device functionality is enhanced using microfluidics, the science fluids confined on the micron scale. The advantages of optofluidic tuning are many-fold: it is highly practical to tune photonic structures by inserting microfluids into voids, which are inherently mobile thus creating a highly reconfigurable device. The large variety of fluid optical properties and high refractive index contrasts available also increase the range of tunability Further, if a photonic structure is modified in a know way by a given fluid, that structure can act as a sensor of that fluids properties.
