DISTRIBUTED ENERGY RESOURCE PLANNING AT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON

With the prospect of distributed energy resources [DER] becoming an integral part of the nation's electric infrastructure, the need for utilities to research, develop, and deploy existing and emerging DER technologies has become imminent. Southern California Edison [SCE] has been identifying, reviewing and assessing the impact of various devices used in DER applications for some time. To date, SCE has evaluated 15 different microturbines at its testbed facilities and is working to successfully extend its program to other technologies. SCE has also integrated the evaluation of DER alternatives into its traditional distribution system planning process. The methodologies and principles proposed for such integration will be described.
