Dixie Escalante is an electric utility located in Southern Utah. Prior to 2003, Dixie did not use a SCADA System to monitor their 20 substations, switchyards, and metering points which operated at various voltages ranging from 138kV to 4.1kV. In 2003, Dixie Escalante installed two new 120 MVA transformers to upgrade a critical transmission line. The importance of the new line prompted Dixie to also add an on-line transformer monitoring system. To better view the data from the on-line models and to add SCADA capabilities to their system, Dixie decided to also add a new wireless SCADA system. The new system was first installed late in 2003. It utilizes a secure wireless Ethernet WAN to communicate information to the two new PC based SCADA master stations from the Transformer Monitoring System and the new SCADA RTUs.
