3-alllyl-5,5-dimethylhydantoin/acrylonitrile copolymer (Cop7-1) was prepared by free radical polymerization conducted in water with potassium persulfate as an initiator. Composition of the copolymer was characterized. The copolymer was blended with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) using NaSCN aqueous solution as a solvent, and spinning solution was obtained. The PAN/Cop7-1 blend fibers were prepared through a two-stage and wet spinning process. Mechanical and antibacterial properties and thermal stability of the blend fibers were studied. It was found that the tensile strength of the blend fibers dropped a little while the breaking elongation rate increased; after treated with 1% regular chlorine bleach, the blend fibers showed powerful antibacterial ability.
