Human-centered design methods and design thinking are being promoted and increasingly adopted beyond the traditional creative design disciplines. These approaches are touted as tools for enhanced creativity that help align narrow problem solving in any domain with actual human capabilities and experiences—and hence the broader human condition. Engineering education, in particular, has been impacted by the rise in use of human-centered design problem-solving and educational approaches, largely for the better. Design-centric pedagogies can enable heightened student engagement, better contextualized problem solving, a broader range of inquiry methods employed to understand the problem and posit solution concepts, and increased emphasis on experimentation, prototyping, and user testing.
