The Wear of All Cobalt Chrome Couples, With and Without an Amorphous Carbon Coating

Despite undergoing a recent renaissance there remain concerns over the wear of metal-on-metal hip prostheses. It would therefore be of great value if such all metal couples could be studied in a screening wear rig where tribological fundamentals could be investigated. In addition, one means of reducing the overall wear could be to employ a hard surface coating, such as an amorphous carbon coating, which is known to be biocompatible [1].
