Linear Motion Actuator for Electromechanical Brake

The safety technology performance of brake systems continues to advance, greatly contributing to vehicle stability [1]. Electromechanical brake (EMB) systems have been developed for further improvement in braking performance and protection of the global environment. Previously many of these reported prototypes employed an electric motor and linear motion device such as ball screw or ball ramp. However, the load conversion rate of these devices is not high enough to generate the large pad clamping force necessary for breaking. NTN has designed an original linear motion device with screw mechanism and friction drive. The load conversion rate is so high that the entire brake unit can be miniaturized and lightened. This paper explains the composition, operating principle and experimental results of the developed device.
