Vegetable oils have been used increasingly as a lubricant base oil because they are able to degrade easily in environment and they are called as environmentally-friendly lubricants. However, thermal and chemical stability of vegetable oils are low, and then life of the oils is short naturally. Double bonds in vegetable oil are easily oxidized in air. On the other hand, vegetable oils are chemical mixture of many organic compounds, that is, they are composed of many organic components. Some of the components are expected to be a natural additive for lubricants. In this paper, tribological properties of Canola oil have been investigated the additive effect of lecithins obtained from vegetable oil will be discussed based on the chemical structure of boundary film analyzed by the surface analytical tools.
