摘要

Gas nitriding has been widely used in order to improve wear resistance and fatigue resistance of materials; however, this treatment is difficult to apply to austenitic stainless steel without chemical treatments, which have some adverse environmental effects, because of the existence of a passive film at the surface. In this study, a fine particle peening (FPP) is introduced as the pre-treatment prior to gas nitriding. It is expected to facilitate the diffusion of nitrogen into the material during the nitriding process due to the fine grains generated by FPP treatment. The aims of this study are to characterize the nitrided layer generated by the hybrid surface modification; combination of FPP treatment and gas nitriding, and to clarify the effect of this hybrid surface treatment on the tribological properties of AISI 316 stainless steel.
