Understanding of tribological behavior of cast iron in boundary lubrication: development of a phenomenological model

In Diesel engines, the contact between cylinder liner and piston rings at the top dead center is in boundary lubrication regime, which may lead to wear phenomena. It is of great importance to understand the wear behavior of the materials in these conditions, in order to optimize the wear resistance of this contact, by modifying the mechanical properties of the materials and the topography of the surfaces in contact.
