With recent improvements in high speed image acquisitions systems in terms of both speed and image quality, and with parallel enhancements in 3D digital image correlation (3D-DIC) capabilities, researchers in the field of experimental solid mechanics have the ability to acquire unique transient data and improve our understanding of dynamic events in a way that was not possible previously. In this article, the authors have made an effort to use a high speed image acquisition system in conjunction with DIC to make full field measurements on the surface of a aluminum sheet subjected to explosive loading. Information gathered during these experiments provides valuable insight regarding material and structural behavior under extreme loading conditions and can be used to design and manufacture improved armor protection systems.
