POSS (polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes) can be incorporated into polymer systems in a number of ways including blending , grafting and copolymerization . When melt blending POSS has the ability to solubilize, aggregate or self assemble when incorporated into a polymer system depending on the degree of compatibility between the functional groups of the POSS and chemical nature of the polymer. The present system of aminopropylisobutyl POSS and nylon 6 (Figure 1) was chosen because it was believed that the amiphiphilic nature of the POSS would promote some sort of self assembly within the amorphous regions of the matrix while the hydrogen bonding amine group may allow for some incorporation into the nylon crystals.
