MacKnight et al [1] indicated in their review that sulfonated rubber ionomers can be used as a thermoplastic elastomer. Makowski et al [2,3] prepared ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM) ionomers by sulfonating EPDM in hexane using acetyl sulfate, followed by neutralization with zinc acetate. Canter obtained butyl rubber ionomers by sulfonation of butyl rubber with SO3-triethyl phosphate complex, followed by neutralization with NaOH. Weiss et al [5] prepared ionomers from sulfonated SEBS (hydrogenated styrene-butadiene-styrene triblock copolymer) using acetyl sulfate in 1,2-dichloroethane. Storey et al [6] synthesized ionomers of styrene-isobutylene-styrene triblock copolymer by sulfonation with acetyl sulfate, followed by neutralization with alcoholic solution of metallic ions. However, the above-mentioned ionomers were derived from rubbers with a low degree of unsaturation.
