The design and synthesis of polymeric organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) has been a major research focus in academia and industry due to the potential stability, processability, and tunability of these materials in comparison to their inorganic counterparts. In the last decade the emphasis on polymeric OLEDs has focused on conjugated polymers. However, in recent years the stability of conjugated polymer-based OLEDs has been questioned. A second approach that has the potential to overcome this limitation is the functionalization of a polymeric backbone with emission-transporting mesogens. The resulting material should combine the stability and polymer processing properties of the polymer with the excellent transporting/emission properties of the mesogen.
