The gasification of coals is not new; but it is not absolutely clear when it first happened. What is certain is that it became important and a major source for domestic and industrial use in Victorian times. It remained a major contributor until the 1950s when worldwide discoveries of natural gas and crude oil began to make its major by-product – coke - difficult to sell.
