Commercial naphtha reforming catalysts cannot withstand the harsh reaction conditions used in a fluidized bed for producing hydrogen or tailored syn gas from biomass pyrolysis liquids and vapors. Fluidization is required to optimize the contact of catalyst with the feedstock, which tends to form coke instead of being reformed in a fixed bed reactor. Commercial catalysts, which generally consist of nickel coated onto alumina supports, attrit significantly when fluidized with consistent losses of 10-20 wt percent per day. Because process economics cannot tolerate such catalyst losses, we needed to identify and/or develop an attrition-resistant support that could withstand fluidized reforming. Numerous support screening experiments showed that a commercially available alumina material produced by a ceramics manufacturer could have the necessary strength to withstand fluidizing conditions. Catalysts made from these supports have been used to reform pyrolysis liquids and vapors to hydrogen and syn gas and the generated performance data used to refine catalyst compositions. We will report the results of these catalyst performance tests and describe the application of a multivariate technique to the development of catalyst compositions for refoming renewable feedstocks to fuel gases.
