Accurate process control is paramount to the successful operation of a distillation column. In multi-component distillation, such as is present in a tall oil refinery, many traditional techniques for controlling distillations columns are difficult to implement, and simple, yet reliable techniques, such as material balance control typically are utilized. However, in order to improve efficiency in separating components while ensuring that products always meet specification, some advanced control techniques can be implemented.
