It is universally recognized that a fixed-bed sorption process for removal of inorganic contaminants (heavy metals and radio-nuclides) is operationally simple, requires virtually no start up time and forgiving toward fluctuations in feed water compositions. However, in order for the fixed bed process to be viable and economically attractive, the sorbent must exhibit high degree of affinity and selectivity towards the target contaminants, be durable and amenable to efficient regeneration and reuse. In an ideal situation, the removal of the target contaminants must not cause any changes in the electrolytic qualities (PH, TDS) of the treated water.
