NEW EMERGENCY RESPONSE TOOL FOR BLOWING GAS INFLATABLE BYPASS STOPPPER

The Gas Technology Institute (GTI) is leading the development of an inflatable stopping device that internally seals off a ruptured gas main usually caused by third-party damage. Additionally, the inflatable bladder has a passageway through its center creating an internal bypass mechanism that allows gas to continue to flow to downstream customers. The stopper is inserted into the main upstream of the damaged area through an insertion tee and packing gland. When properly positioned, the stopper is inflated effectively sealing off the hole in the main. Field crews can then safely assess the damaged pipe and repair as necessary. The stopping technique is insensitive to the exact size, shape and location of the damaged pipe area and is capable of isolating four inch and two inch plastic distribution mains operating at pressures up to 60 psig. The device is to be relatively inexpensive, lightweight, easy to use and quick to deploy.
