This paper describes an exploratory study on the structural changes of the top surface DLC coatings. Pin-on-disk sliding experiments were conducted in hydrogen gas with two types of DLC coatings including a-C:H hydrogenated DLC and ta-C hydrogen-free DLC. Pure iron was used for counterface pin material. The specimen surfaces after the sliding tests were observed with a photo emission electron microscopy, PEEM. It was found that the work function of DLC's surfaces was decreased by sliding, and showed striped patterns. It was also found with PEEM that thicker carbon transfer film was formed on the iron pin when it was slid against the hydrogenated DLC than against the hydrogen-free DLC.
